Chemical
Dependency Evaluation
A
Chemical Dependency Evaluation is a
clinical assessment conducted to
determine if an individual has a
diagnosis of dependence or abuse to any
particular or multiple substances.
At times the evaluation may
include the use of assessment tools, as
well as collateral information.
The collateral information will
only be obtained with previous consent
from the individual, unless the
evaluation is conducted for legal or
administrative purposes.
The evaluation will not only review
details related with substance use but
also medical history, social history,
psychological history, physical or
emotional symptoms, signs of
intoxication or withdrawal, etc.
Additional resources may include lab
testing to identify co-morbid medical
conditions and specialized drug testing
such as hair, urine, breath or saliva
samples to detect substances or drugs of
abuse.
The evaluation typically is one to two
hours long and relevant information is
gathered for the purpose of
making a diagnosis as well as to provide
treatment recommendations if
appropriate.
The psychiatrist will determine
the appropriate level of care
(outpatient vs. inpatient) as well as
the need for treatment of any co-morbid
psychiatric or medical conditions
.
